Commitment

As I walked out of my classroom, my car looked lonely. The vast empty parking lot was its backdrop. I shut the door with my throat parched, water bottle empty, eyes heavy, thoughts filled. The math dept chair whose notorious for leaving late passed by an hour earlier, checking in to see how I was. “I’ve gotta head out, but I caught your light on as I headed to my car.” Seasons prepare to change from summer to fall, yet the sun still sets late. The sun was setting then.
I knew these first few weeks would require sacrifice, and resolve to sacrifice my life to get this year started off right is precisely what I decided to do. But I didn’t expect this:
100+ teachers, members of the administrative team, support staff, custodians, 2000+ students step onto campus daily, yet for the past two, I’ve been the last to leave.
