How’d you get into education? Through my work as a mentor and tutor in the K-12 levels, I became aware of the disparities between my own education and my students. These experiences prompted me to take coursework in education and learn about the institutional racism that was occuring in America’s educational system. I eventually found my calling in Student Affairs in higher education, working with college students. Working alongside my K-12 colleagues, I hope to ensure that students continue through the pipeline that is the American educational system or at the very least, find a passion in life.
What is your purpose in education? I hope to work with students to help them become agents of social change, regardless of the fields that they enter. College is a time major development – academically, emotionally and spiritually. A little guidance never hurts in this search. As a the value of a college education continues to increase, it becomes even more important to make sure that education is valid, both inside and outside of the classroom.
Anything Else? The educational system is ridiculous and I’m hoping that my time as a scholar-practitioner allows me to think even more critically and creatively about how we can prepare our youth to be citizens in this ever-changing world. My goal is to use this space as a canvass to express that creativity. I look forward to seeing this collaborative space begin, evolve and grow as we as educators do the same. Oh, and don’t mind me if I also need to vent a bit.
